In this MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @ajnicholsIBI.

With no major signings or trades occurring on Sunday, there are no "Top Stories." Instead, I will give a rundown of all of the day's news and notes.

Here are the stories from Sunday, January 19th.

News and Notes

  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported that the Nationals are now showing interest in free agent closer Grant Balfour.  Washington already has three relievers with closing experience in Rafael SorianoTyler Clippard, and Drew Storen, however sources have stated that the Nationals are interested in dealing Storen.
  • Rosenthal also reported that the Reds are in advanced talks with former face of the Tribe, Grady Sizemore.  Cincinnati general manager Walt Jocketty told John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer that some details still have to be worked out, but the club hopes to get things done sometime next week.  Jocketty also told Fay that both Major and Minor League deals have been discussed with Sizemore.
  • Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe wrote in his article that teams are shying away from Nelson Cruz because his salary demands have yet to come down, according to one National League general manager.
  • Cafardo also said that teams have been reluctant to give Matt Garza the 4-5 year deal he is looking for, and he may have to settle for fewer years.
  • Carl Pavano is attempting to comeback from life-threatening injuries and getting his spleen removed.  Pavano is expected to throw a bullpen for teams in February.
  • David Kaplan of CSN Chicago believes that Masahiro Tanaka will make his decision on either Tuesday or Thursday.
  • Reliever Todd Coffey had a showcase for 14 teams on Sunday, according to Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish.  Coffey missed all of 2013 after undergoing a second Tommy John surgery.
