In this MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @AndrewIBI.

Here are the stories from Thursday, March 13th.

Top Stories:

  • Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik told Jon Heyman of CBS Sports that his team has maintained a dialogue with Kendrys Morales and agent Scott Boras. It is believed, however, the Mariners have "little to no" money left to spend on another free agent.

Tribe News:

  • The Indians announced that Jason Giambi has a non-displaced rib fracture and will miss three to four weeks. He suffered the injury on March 7 at the Chicago Cubs after a third inning HBP. It's unlikely he'll be ready for Opening Day.
  • J.C. Ramirez, a non-roster invitee, suffered a fractured left thumb and ligament sprain during his "B" game appearance on Tuesday, which will likely sideline the right-hander for eight to 10 weeks.
  • Shaun Marcum will throw live batting practice on Friday, while Danny Salazar and Cody Allen are scheduled to appear in a minor league camp game.
  • Terry Francona announced that Zach McAllister will open the year as the club's number three man in the rotation. This means that the rotation for the opening series is now set with Masterson, Kluber, and McAllister set to take the hill against Oakland.

News and Notes:

•'s Britt Ghiroli reported that Orioles pitcher Kevin Gausman is unlikely to make the team out of spring training.
  • Bryan Hoch of reported that the Yankees are planning to give Alfonso Soriano a look at first base to improve his versatility, but there's been no talk of him seeing any time at second base.
  • The Royals and right-hander Brett Tomko have agreed to a minor league contract and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported that Tomko will earn $510,000 if he makes the big league club.
  • Jon Heyman of also reported that the Orioles have joined the Rays and Mets as teams discussing a deal with the Mariners for middle infielder Nick Franklin. Heyman noted that Baltimore would be interested in using Franklin at second base, where the team remains somewhat unsettled entering the season.
•'s Anthony Castrovince reported that the Yankees offer of a seven-year, $140 million deal was on the table for less than a day and then pulled it back quickly in order to instead sign Carlos Beltran to a three-year, $45 million deal.

I'll believe that when I see it. Will a team really give one or both of them a multi-year deal in June? Not easy staying in shape that long without playing real hard to imagine the players with their competitive nature holding out that long.

Latest is Boras is willing to have Morales and Drew sit out until the June draft is over.

Yes, the 1-3 spots in the rotation make sense. No way should they expect Salazar to be higher than #4, and there's a good case for him to be #5, at least at the beginning of the season.

Still can't believe Morales declined the QO...essentially a DH-only (maybe can play 1B) who really hasn't been that great a hitter...

Really hard to find a landing spot for him if Seattle is out. Maybe the Orioles if they use Cruz in LF? Already lost their 1st (Ubaldo), competitive balance (Norris trade), and 2nd rounder (Cruz)....losing a 3rd isn't bad for Morales.

Yanks? Maybe they could move Soriano and use Morales at DH?

Tigers? Makes little sense to me but learned not to count them out...could move Miggy back to 3B and use Castellanos in the OF to replace Dirks....Morales may not be worse than Prince at 1B....

Rnagers? Is Morales enough of an upgrade over Moreland?

Angels? Did deal Trumbo and he is familiar with them.

Pirates? Can he handle 1B enough to play in the NL? really only need a platoon guy with Sanchez (though side note...would love to land Sanchez if they got Morales. Good platoon option for Chiz, means Frenchy can go to Columbus/be released). Plus they may not want to lose a pick

Brewers? Same issues as with Pirates...but with a top 15 unprotected pick...

Mets? Got Ike and Duda....have lost their 1st already though. Drew makes more sense here though...

Rays? Can't see them losing the pick...but could trade Joyce maybe and use Morales as the DH.

Cleveland? Again, can't see us giving up the pick for a DH...could fit if Santana is your everyday 3B and Chiz is in AAA. Morales could DH. Extreme long-shot but guess it's not impossible.

Did I miss anyone? Really doesn't look good IMO if you're Morales...

Moral of the story...when you're never been worth more than $13.5M in any season in your major league career or more than $7.5M in the last four seasons...don't turn down a $14.1M guaranteed deal...

Yeah it was Choo.

Who did the Yanks offer 7yr 140 million for less than a day and instead sign Beltran? Was it Choo?

I like the decision to go with Masterson, Kluber and McAllister 1-2-3 in the rotation to start the year.

Allows the Tribe to be careful with Salazar early on, could even skip one of his starts if they so choose with how the schedule is set up (even if he's the #4 guy).
