Morimando strong in win over Frederick
Mudcats starter Shawn Mormando (2-0, 2.45) looked sharp on Sunday, allowing just one run in six innings of work.
ZEBULON, NC — Shawn Morimando looked stout over six innings as the Carolina Mudcats beat the Frederick Keys 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium. Alex Monsalve drove in a season-high three runs and the Mudcats (9-7) snapped the Keys’ winning streak at four games.
Morimando (2-0) held Frederick (7-9) to one run on six hits. The left-hander was locked in from the opening pitch as he struck out five without a walk. His only blemish was a solo home run by Creede Simpson with two out in the fourth.
Parker Bridwell (0-2) was spotty in the losing decision for Frederick. The right-hander allowed four runs on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
The Mudcats took a lead they would never surrender in the first inning. Todd Hankins reached to begin the inning after he was plunked on the shoulder. A walk to Ollie Linton moved Hankins to second and a double-steal positioned both at third and second. Anthony Gallas bounced out to second, allowing Hankins across home for a 1-0 lead.
After Simpson’s homer cut the lead to one, the Mudcats went to work in against Bridwell in the fifth. Linton singled with one out and scored on a double by Anthony Gallas with two away. Alex Monsalve scored Gallas on a ground ball just beyond the reach of shortstop Adrian Marin.
Leading 4-1 in the seventh, Carolina put the final touches on the scoring with a two-run double by Monsalve.
