Mudcats Can’t Find Spark in Independence Day Loss

Zebulon, N.C. — Mike Augliera and the Salem Red Sox held the Carolina Mudcats to four hits in a 3-0 win on Thursday night at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats fell to 4-9 in the second half, and 26-57 on the year. Salem improved to 8-6 in the second half, and 41-43 on the year.

Joseph Colon (0-1) was left with the loss after hurling three innings. The right-hander allowed three runs on four hits.Francisco Jimenez and Owen Dew both provided solid relief for the Mudcats, allowing just one hit over the final six frames.

Augliera (6-5) picked up the win after tossing a gem. The right-hander threw a season-high eight innings, scattering just four hits with seven strikeouts. Robby Scott picked up hit first save of the year after tossing an inning of relief.

Salem jumped out to an early lead following a Deven Marrerosingle in the top of the 1st. Marrero reached second on a balk by Colon, and Keury De La Cruz doubled Marrero home to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.

Henry Ramos led off the third inning with a double for Salem. Marrero reached base for the second time in the game after Colon plunked him. Controversy followed on the next play as Brandon Jacobs lined a pitch down the left field line. The ball appeared to hit just left of the chalk, but was ruled fair.  The Sox were able to plate two, as the Mudcats were left to argue.

Carolina had just one runner reach second base in their fifth shutout loss of the year. Jerrud Sabourin and Joey Wendle recorded two hits apiece. Tyler Naquin’s 26-game on-base streak was snapped after the center fielder finished 0x4.
