Zebulon, N.C. — The Carolina Mudcats scored five times in the last of the fourth to pull away for a 9-4 win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Monday night at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats (15-14, 37-62) climbed above .500 for the first time in the second half by pounding out 15 hits.

The Blue Rocks (14-16, 47-53) dropped their eighth straight.

Cole Cook (1-1) earned his first win with Carolina this year by tossing five innings. He limited the Rocks to three runs on four hits while striking out a trio.

Cody Fassold (5-6) absorbed the loss after allowing six runs in relief of starter J.C. Sulbaran. The right-hander allowed seven hits over 2.1 innings.

The Mudcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second on back-to-back hits by Justin Toole and Zack MacPhee. Paddy Matera and Alex Lavisky both beat throws from the outfield to score the runs. Jordan Smith doubled on a liner to the left field corner and scored on a two-bagger by Bo Greenwell.

Wilmington rallied to tie the game in the fourth. With runners at the corners and two out, Jared Schlehuber lined a 1-2 pitch into left to bring in one. Yem Prades launched a fly to deep left-center. Bryson Myles attempted to make an athletic catch, but the ball bounced off his glove, allowing two runs to score.

The game was all Carolina from there. Lavisky and Toole singled and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice by MacPhee. Myles beat out a high chop to the right of the mound to score Lavisky for a 4-3 edge. Smith followed with a hit to score Toole.

Greenwell provided the biggest shot of the inning. With runners going, the right fielder laced a sharp liner into the right field corner for a two-run double.

Joey Wendle singled off Fassold to continue the inning. The Mudcats attempted a double steal and as Wendle slid in safe to second, Greenwell scored from third for an 8-3 lead.

Lavisky provided the final tally for Carolina in the fifth when he scored from third on a wild pitch.

The Blue Rocks brought a run across in the ninth against reliever Francisco Jimenez for the final margin.

The Mudcats go for the series sweep against the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Tuesday, July 23rd. All Tuesday night home games at Five County Stadium are “Dollar Dog Days” presented by Carolina Packers. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m.
