Mudcats implode against Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Myrtle Beach Pelicans scored four runs, needing only one hit, over the final innings to beat the Carolina Mudcats 5-2 on Sunday night at TicketReturn.com Field. The win assured the Pelicans (33-23, 69-57) of the weekend series, and vaults them six games ahead of the Mudcats for the Southern division wildcard spot.
Zach Osborne (5-0) dealt two scoreless innings in relief for the win. Ben Rowen retired the final three outs in order for his 17th save.
The collapse spoiled a great start by Will Roberts. The right-hander held the Pelicans to a run on four hits over six innings. He struck out six without allowing a walk. With the Mudcats (27-29, 59-67) leading 2-1 in the seventh, Myrtle Beach took advantage of a bullpen lacking control. Fabio Martinez (0-1) allowed the tying, and go-ahead, runs to score on three walks, a hit batter and three wild pitches.
Two more runs scored for the Pelicans in the eighth on two walks, a single and an error for the final margin.
Carolina took the lead in the sixth inning. The Mudcats put together four hits, and aided by two errors, runs scored on knocks from Tony Wolters and Tyler Cannon.
Justin Toole finished with three hits.
The Carolina Mudcats open a four-game series against the Potomac Nationals at Pfitzner Stadium on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Mudcats return home to host the Salem Red Sox for three games on August 24. Tickets are available by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
