AUBURN, NY- The offense has been very quiet in the early stages of the 2014 season for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. After the first 4 innings on Sunday afternoon it appeared it would stay that way. But the Scrappers offense then exploded for 14 runs over the next 6 innings en route to a 15-5 win over the Auburn Doubledays.

With three new draft picks all making their professional debuts, the Scrappers saw a boost of energy added to their lineup. The three, Greg Allen, Steven Patterson and Taylor Murphy, combined for 8 hits, 6 RBI and 6 runs. Allen just missed a homerun on a drive off the top of the wall in right field and settled for an RBI triple on the 5th inning.

The Scrappers pounded out 17 hits and saw all 9 starters record at least 1 hit. Francisco Mejia and Martin Cervenka each drove in 2 runs for the Scrappers.

Julian Merryweather got the start on the mound for the Scrappers and was perfect in his 3 innings of work. Over 3 innings he did not allow a hit, a run and did not walk a batter while striking out 2.

Anthony Vizcaya (1-0), then took over for Merryweather in the bottom of the 4th innings. Vizcaya worked 3.1 innings and allowed 5 runs, all earned, while picking up his first win of the season. Vizcaya allowed 5 hits and walked 4 while striking out 4. Justin Garcia worked the final 2.2 innings for the Scrappers. Garcia gave up 2 hits and struck out 3. He did not allow a run or a walk.

The win for Mahoning Valley snaps a 3-game losing streak that started against the Doubledays in game 2 of the doubleheader on June 19th.

The Scrappers will conclude their road trip on Monday at 7:05 PM against the Doubledays. Sean Brady will start for the Scrappers.
