News on Offense:

The Captains have been underwhelming at the plate, but are getting the job done. This week, they posted a team average of .236 and did win six games and scored 32 runs (average of 5.33 per game). They are currently fifth in team batting average with .251 (Bowling Green leads with .261), fifth in stolen bases with 45 (Lansing, 73) and sixth in runs scored with 171 (Quad Cities, 204).

Shortstop Francisco Lindor returned to Lake County and picked up right where he left off in the batter’s box (he was away from the team for personal reasons, not an injury). Lindor hit .500 in his abbreviated week, drove-in seven, hit a homerun, and smacked two doubles. Lindor is hitting .322 on the season with 4 homeruns and I expect him to be named as a Midwest League All-Star when rosters are announced.

It has been a month since I initially saw second baseman Robel Garcia at the plate. What a difference one month makes. When I first saw him, he was swinging at anything that came within two feet of the plate and he had a very low average. Now, he is much more patient and is starting to drive the ball. In turn, it is raising his batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. I am going to continue to keep an eye on him as he is one of the more intriguing prospects on the team.

Hitter of the Week: Todd Hankins

Hankins batted .389 on the week and posted three stolen bases. He also had a double and a triple and only struck out three times. Hankins was ranked as the 87th best prospect in the organization by the Indians Prospect Insider this past off-season.

News on Pitching:

Once again, the pitching staff anchored the week that was for the Captains as they have been incredibility strong the past three weeks. Starters Cody Anderson and Joseph Colon continue to lead the starters and Jeff Johnson has been a dependable closer at the back-end of the bullpen. Currently, the Captains are eighth in the MWL with a 3.47 ERA (Lansing, 2.61 ERA leads), and fourth in strikeouts with 301 (Fort Wayne, 333).

Manuel Carmona (no relation to the former Fausto Carmona) made his Captains debut this past week. He went one and two-thirds of an inning versus Great Lakes and gave up two runs (one run was earned). His next outing was not so great either. He went one inning versus South Bend and gave up another earned run. He currently sports a 6.75 ERA with four walks and three strikeouts. Carmona pitched with the Arizona League team last season and went 2-1 with a 2.41 ERA in 20 games.

Pitcher of the Week: Cody Anderson

Anderson continues to impress in the rotation. He went 2-0 this week, struck out 10, walked three and allowed only one earned run in 12 innings of work. I believe Anderson will be with the Captains for the entire season, barring any injuries. Anderson was the 73rd ranked prospect by the Indians Prospect Insider this past off-season.
