News on Offense:

For the second week in a row, a Captains position player has won the Indians Minor League Player of the Week award. This week, the recipient is shortstop Francisco Lindor. He went 11-for-29 at the plate (.379), with a double, two home runs, four RBI and five stolen bases from April 30th through May 6th. Lindor was the first round pick in the 2011 draft (8th overall) and is playing in his first professional season at Low-A Lake County. Congratulations Francisco!

The offense was very sluggish this week as they only batted .212 as a team, but the Captains managed to win five games. The only concern for me is the strikeout to walk ratio. The Captains are striking out way too much and taking a walk way too little (it’s roughly a 2:1 ratio). Like any team, they need to cut down on the strikeouts and try to improve their ways of getting on base (be it by walk, base hit, error, etc…).

Second baseman Robel Garcia appeared as the leadoff batter in Sunday’s contest. This is the first time this season that Manager David Wallace has had Garcia in that spot. Garcia ended up going 2-for-5 with a run scored and two strikeouts. After LeVon Washington went down with a hip injury, Wallace has mostly used Luigi Rodriguez and Francisco Lindor at the top of the batting order.

Hitter of the Week: Jordan Smith

Smith is the first two time winner for my weekly award. All this guy has done is hit, hit, and hit. Smith batted .320 for the week with two doubles, a triple, home run and five RBI. He scored five runs, walked twice and only struck out once.

News on Pitching:

Lefty Shawn Morimando made his full season debut on Sunday afternoon versus the Bowling Green Hot Rods in Bowling Green, KY. Morimando went four innings and gave up two earned runs on only two hits (one was a homerun). He did not factor in the decision. Morimando was a 19th round selection in the 2011 draft and pitched with the Arizona League team last season due to signing a few days before the signing deadline.

Cole Cook had a whirlwind of a week when he was promoted to Columbus on Friday. Cook knew that he was going to be there for the one game and then catch up with Lake County in Bowling Green. The Columbus game ended up being rained out and Cole did not make an appearance. He did document his time with the Clippers on his blog, Cole Cook’s Dugout Chatter, and you can read it here. Oh, he also picked up his first professional save too!

Pitcher of the Week: Joseph Colon

Colon was masterful this week as he went 15 solid innings and only gave up one run (0.60 ERA) while striking out eight and walking three. He also went 2-0. He was the IPI’s #92 ranked prospect coming into this season.

You forgot to credit Johnson with the save on May 9th. Overall though, good review.
