The season is winding down to its final week and the Lake County Captains won’t be seeing any postseason action this year. The past two weeks were vital for the team's chances to advance, but the wins just didn’t happen as the team was swept by West Michigan and dropped two of three to Dayton. With one homestand remaining, the team will look to finish strong before the fall leagues start.

Smooth Sailing

LeVon Washington, OF
4 G, .413 BA, .488 OBP, 1.200 OPS, 6-for-15, 4 R, 2 RBI, 3:2 K:BB

WashTime continues to tick as he’s posted one of his best seasons so far. It would have been interesting to see how he would have fared without any injuries slowing him down, but regardless, he’s proved that he can hit at the Midwest League level. Washington has hit consistently in the time that he has played, and is hitting .341 over his last 10 games.

Dylan Baker, SP
2 G, 0-0, 12 IP, 2.25 ERA, 3 R, 8 H, 12:4 K:BB

Baker remained the staff’s most reliable starter last week and it’s a bit surprising he didn’t receive a promotion to high-A Carolina this year. During his start last Wednesday, Baker worked some magic as he did some damage control. He surrendered seven hits, but only two runs touched the dish.

Dorssys Paulino, SS
5 G, .300 BA, .300 OBP, .750 OPS, 6-for-19, 2 R, 4 RBI, 2:0 K:BB

Though his on-base and on-base plus slugging could be higher, it’s nice to see Paulino hitting for average. His bat has made visible improvement over the course of the season, it’s just a shame it’s taken this long to find some consistency.

Walking the Plank

Anderson Polanco, RHP
2 G, 1-1, 2 IP, 18.00 ERA, 3 H, 4 R, 2:4 K:BB

Polanco had an ugly outing last Friday, but somehow received the win as the offense produced some late runs. That said, he’s racking up the strikeouts – he’s just also allowing too many runs to score. He doesn’t fare well with runners in scoring position as he has a 15.00 ERA in those situations, so perhaps he just needs to develop the mental fortitude to pitch under pressure.

Cody Ferrell, OF
5 G, .117 BA, .283 OBP, .400 OPS, 2-for-16, 1 R, 0 RBI, 7:1 K:BB

Ferrell hasn’t been with the Captains very long, but so far it’s been up-and-down. He started out fairly well and has hit a bad decline over his last six games or so. What stand out most is the strikeouts, but perhaps he is merely pressing as the season draws to a close.

Robbie Aviles, SP
1 G, 0-1, 5 IP, 9.00 ERA, 8 H, 5 R, 1:0 K:BB

Aviles has crafted a nice season, but his start on Thursday wasn’t so pretty. His last two outings have been less than favorable as he too seems to struggle with runners on. Aviles tends to pitch in patterns, where he’ll string two or three good outings before the following few outings are rough.

Taking On Water

No players were placed on the disabled list this week.

Boarding Ship

Reliever Geoff Davenport joined the Captains from the Arizona League Indians. So far, Davenport has made two appearances for the Captains, posting a 0-1 record and 3.60 ERA.

Leaving Port

Reliever Kyle Blair was assigned to the double-A Akron Aeros this week. Blair only made one appearance for the Captains, in which he tossed a scoreless inning.

On the Horizon

The final homestand of the season commences Wednesday as the Captains host the Lansing Lugnuts. The two teams will play a three-game set before the Captains hit the road one last time for a three-game series at Bowling Green.
