Packer, Bullpen Bring Hammer Down on SeaWolves
Erie, PA – If the title of Wednesday’s Akron game at Erie was “The Return of Matt Packer,” then the sub-title might have been “Business As Usual.”
Packer, the Aeros all-star lefty, dealt seven innings of three-hit, one-run baseball to earn his 11th win of the season, as the Aeros defeated the SeaWolves, 5-1, at Jerry Uht Park. The Aeros (61-68) took two of three games in the series.
Packer (11-8) snapped a personal three-game losing streak, and returned to the form that allowed him to win nine straight decisions from May to July. He worked around four walks—the most he has issued in a start since April 22nd—and fanned five Erie hitters. Packer is now 4-0, in five appearances against the SeaWolves this season, and has allowed just four runs in 31 2/3 innings. Packer’s 11 wins tie him for the EL lead.
The Aeros took the lead in the top of the second with a pair of runs off Drew VerHagen (2-4). After Carlos Moncrief doubled, Tyler Holt lined an RBI single. Ronny Rodriguez singled, moving Holt to third, and Jake Lowery chipped in an RBI groundout to make it 2-0.
Packer allowed his only run in the fourth when a run scored on a wild pitch, but the Aeros got that run back in the sixth on Cedric Hunter’s lead-off homer, his 12th of the season, to make it 3-1. The Aeros added two insurance runs in the ninth against Ryan Robowski. Holt scored on a wild pitch and Rodriguez scored on a throwing error to extend the lead to 5-1.
Trey Haley pitched the eighth in relief of Packer, and Jose Flores worked the ninth. Both gave up a single, but no runs.
Erie (68-61) stayed a half-game behind first-place Harrisburg, who lost at Richmond. The SeaWolves begin a series at Harrisburg Thursday night.
The Aeros will begin the final homestand of the regular season on Thursday night when they host the Binghamton Mets in the opener of a four-game series at 7:05. LHP Mark Cohoon (9-3, 4.18) is the expected starter for the B-Mets, while RHP Toru Murata (5-5, 3.67) will get the ball for the Aeros. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1350 AM, and online at www.sportsradio1350.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
