Packer Twirls Another Gem, Gets Help from Pen in 3-1 Win
Bowie, MD—On a night when the Akron Aeros needed a stopper, they got three.
Needing a win to end a four-game losing streak and avoid a series sweep, Aeros lefty Matt Packer and righthanded relievers Enosil Tejeda and Jose Flores combined on a four-hitter Wednesday night as the Aeros slipped by Bowie, 3-1, at Prince George’s Stadium.
Packer (7-5) went six innings and limited the Sox to three hits and a single run. It came in the first inning when Niuman Romero singled, stole second, and scored on a bloop single by Seth Loman. After that, Packer was lights out.
He retired the next 11 hitters in a row, and allowed just one more hit through six innings. Packer won for the sixth straight time and lowered his ERA to 2.50, tops among active EL pitchers. He walked one and struck out five in the game.
The Aeros (40-45) assumed the lead for good when they notched two runs in the third against Bowie starter Tyler Wilson (3-1). After Justin Toole and Jose Ramirez led off with singles, Matt Lawson sacrificed both runners to second and third. Tyler Holt forced in Toole with a groundout, and Jesus Aguilar chased home Ramirez with a single. It was Aguilar’s 63rd RBI of the season.
Packer turned the lead over to the bullpen in the seventh. Enosil Tejeda tossed two scoreless innings, working around two walks in the eighth. After the Aeros tacked on an insurance run in the eighth to make it 3-1, Jose Flores worked the ninth for his 10th save.
