Santana named starting third baseman, Giambi makes roster
Lonnie Chisenhall has already made the roster, but he will play in more of a backup role at third base when Santana needs to fill in as the backup catcher or needs a day off. Francona made it clear that it will not be a platoon at third base and Santana will play on a regular basis, so Chisenhall may be the regular DH at the outset of the season.
Also, the club announced that Jason Giambi will be added to the 40-man roster on Sunday and will be placed on the Major League disabled list (fractured rib) on that day retroactive to March 21. He would be eligible to come off the DL on April 5th and will travel with the team in the meantime.
With the Indians already set to add Nyjer Morgan to the roster, the Indians will need to clear two spots on the 40-man roster to add Morgan and Giambi. Right-handed reliever Scott Atchison is also a strong favorite to nail down a bullpen spot, so the Indians could have as many as three 40-man decisions to make by this weekend. At the moment there are no candidates to be 60-day DLed, so two to three players will probably be designated for assignment. The candidates for that would be Colt Hynes, Scott Barnes, Frank Herrmann, Preston Guilmet and Justin Sellers.
selection of Morgan, and Big G and signing of David Murphy, who I feel will never reach the past performance he had with Texas and this will be his last stop and he also did some good things with Texas in the past but? I cannot wait for the start of the season and hope that management waits up and signs Masterson but who knows about them. Thanks for the great articles you bring us the fan. Go Tribe.
