Scrappers complete sweep, win 3-1
Herrera's home run keys Mahoning Valley's first sweep of season
NILES, OH- The Scrappers completed their first sweep of the 2013 season on Thursday night, beating the State College Spikes by a final score of 3-1.
After a horrendous and franchise record-breaking 12 game losing streak, the Scrappers have comeback nicely, winning three straight series for the first time since 2011 and securing victories in seven of their last nine games.
The Scrappers began the road to their first sweep of the season in the second inning on Thursday with a 1-0 lead on a sac fly from Josh McAdams.
In three innings, Sulser allowed just one hit and struck out three, sustaining his brilliant 1.93 ERA.
Heller followed Sulser in the fourth and put together a similar line, going three innings, allowing three hits, and striking out three batters, good enough for his first win as a professional baseball player.
Quietly, Heller has put together one of the better seasons for Mahoning Valley.
In 11 appearances, Heller owns a 1-2 record, but has an ERA of 1.59 and 18 strikeouts, while allowing just three earned runs and 11 hits -- five of which came in a single game against the State College Spikes.
Even Scrappers reliever Briely Puerta joined in on the act, although he did allow the Spikes' only run.
Puerta's three innings provided the Spikes with just two hits, one run, and two walks. He continued the swing-and-miss theme of the previous two Scrappers pitchers with five strikeouts of his own and secured his first save of the season.
The Scrappers, with the sweep of the Spikes, are now at a 15-23 mark on the season after falling to 8-21 during the aforementioned streak.
Tomorrow night's matchup with the Muckdogs will be Batavia's first and only visit to Eastwood Field in 2013.
The Scrappers starter is yet to be determined, but the Muckdogs will send starter Jarlin Garica (0-1, 3.86) to the hill to try to quell the blistering Scrappers.
First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
