Scrappers destroy Ironbirds, 14-3
Mahoning Valley erupted for 9 runs in the seventh inning.
NILES, OH - At the start of the game thThe bats were swinging today here at the Eastwood field where the Mahoning Valley Scrappers played the Aberdeen Ironbirds. With amazing at bats today the Scrappers took home another win.
As the Scrappers kept producing the hits needed they brought home another win against the Ironbirds with a score of 14-3. The Scrappers were off to a good start with right fielder Greg Allen catching a fly ball hit all the way to the fences. With Greg Allen on first, Steven Patterson hit a ball barely missing escaping over the fence getting a double and putting Allen on third. Bradley Zimmer with a hit to first brought in the first run for the Scrappers and Francisco Mejia taking one for the team with a ball hitting him right above the ankle.
At the top of the second Leo Castillo made a nice catch to get the first out by jumping to get the ball in the air. Greg Allen catches a fly ball, and with a runner on third makes an unbelievable throw right to catcher Francisco Mejia getting the out at home.
Francisco Mejia at the top of the third showed the Ironbirds he was not letting them lead off the base that easily. He threw down to first getting the third out for the innings. At the bottom of the third, Steven Patterson hits a ball right down the first base line getting him a triple.
Bradley Zimmer, at the top of the fourth had a nice catch out in center where he dove to make an amazing catch getting the Scrappers their second out. Francisco Mejia had a nice double at the bottom of the fourth with the ball hitting the fence out in right field. Yonathan Mendoza hits a ball out to right field bringing in Mejia for another run.
At the top of the fifth Francisco Mejia showed off his rocket arm once again by throwing out a runner at second.
Stepping in at the top of the sixth for Kieran Lovegrove was Jordan Carter. Short stop, Yonathan Mendoza, had a nice catch with the ball hit behind him. With Francisco Mejia on first, at the bottom of the sixth Leo Castillo hits a ball right down the third base line getting him a double and putting Mejia on third. Yonathan Mendoza hits a ball short out in center bringing in two runs for the Scrappers. With Mendoza at second, Greg Allen hit a ball to center field bringing his teammate home and giving a single. The score at the bottom of the sixth was 5-0.
Francisco Mejia, at the bottom of the seventh had a nice shot out to right field getting a single and advancing Bradley Zimmer. Zimmer then went on to steal third. Leo Castillo with a ball hit to the fence out by center getting him a triple and bringing in the two runners. With a fly ball hit to right field by D'Vone McClure, Castillo tagged up, bringing in another run. Yonathan Mendoza hit out to right field getting a double and advancing Josh McAdams to third. Drake Roberts with a double brought in both runners tacking on another two more runs for the Scrappers. Bradley Zimmer hit a ball-clear out to the right field fence bringing in his two teammates and giving himself a double. Francisco Mejia steps up after Zimmer and swung for fences literally. His ball clears the fence giving him a home run tacking on another two runs for the Scrappers. The score after this inning was 14-0.
After a shutdown seventh inning with 9 runs manager Phil Clark was very confident in his teams hitting and impressed with the adjustments they have been making and how it's been showing especially during this game. "Guys have just made adjustments I thinks it's just that time of the year where they are getting acclimated to pro-ball especially our college guys. And the guys that have been with us for a while I think they are just feeling their swing and what they can and they can't do".
Bases loaded and two fumbles on the field cost the Scrappers two runs so far in the top of the eighth. Making a great double play was short stop Yonathan Mendoza who tossed his fielded ball to second base covered by Drake Roberts who threw to first base getting both outs.
The Scrappers held their defense though and walked away with a 14-3 win.
The Scrappers will be playing July 21, 2014 at the Eastwood field in Niles, Ohio.
