Scrappers fall late to Crosscutters, 4-3
NILES, Ohio- How quickly things can change. A game that the Scrappers seemed to have control of through the first eight innings ended with a walk off base hit and error for the Williamsport Crosscutters and a 4-3 defeat for the Scrappers.
The Scrappers took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. With two outs Nellie Rodriguez singled to drive home Claudio Bautista. Josh McAdams followed Rodriguez with an RBI single of his own to score Nellie from second after he advanced on a throwing error. A Juan Romero home run to left field in the fourth pushed the lead out to 3-0.
Matt Whitehouse started on the mound for Mahoning Valley and worked three scoreless innings. He allowed three hits while walking none. Kerry Doane followed and worked three innings as well. He allowed one earned run on four hits. He also did not walk a batter while striking out three. Kyle Crockett, the Indians fourth round selection this year, made his debut with a perfect inning of work in the seventh. Briely Puerta followed with a perfect inning of his own.
Manuel Carmona (1-2) tried to close out the game in the ninth with the Scrappers leading 3-1. A leadoff single was followed by back to back walks to load the bases with no outs. Carmona was able to strike out Justin Parr for the first out. But then Gustavo Martinez lifted a fly ball to right field that fell in front of Juan Romero who then over ran the ball for an error, allowing the tying and winning runs to score to end the game.
The Scrappers will now head to Jamestown for a three game series starting Monday night.
