Smith hits for the cycle, RubberDucks split series with 6-4 win
Akron recorded a season-high 19 hits in Sunday's victory.
READING, PA. — Jordan Smith hit a go-ahead 2-run triple in the top of the ninth that completed the cycle and led his RubberDucks (59-50) to a 6-4 win at Reading. Akron split the four-game series with the Fightin Phils (44-61).
Both Smith and Bryson Myles hit solo homers in Sunday afternoon’s game.
That was until Akron got to starter Chris Bootcheck in the fifth inning in a two out rally. Three singles from Gonzalez, Anthony Gallas and LaHair started it off, and it was followed with an Adam Abraham double that tied the game up, 3-3.
Roberts pitched five innings in a no decision effort, which was his first of the season. He gave up four earned runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking one batter.
Smith led off the RubberDucks' next inning with a solo homer to right that knotted the game up at four apiece after six. He would then complete his amazing day at the plate with what turned into the game-winning triple in the top of the ninth.
Miguel Gonzalez (0-2, 3.38) suffered his second loss of the season, giving up two runs in the top of the ninth inning after throwing a scoreless eighth.
Shawn Armstrong (5-2, 2.11) earned his fifth win of the season, pitching two scoreless innings of relief and striking out two.
The RubberDucks (59-50) return home Monday for a short three-game series with the Bowie BaySox (54-54). Akron will send LHP Shawn Morimando (1-1, 1.50) and Anthony Vasquez (5-6, 4.56) will be on the hill for the BaySox.
