Smith leads RubberDucks to big late inning 6-5 win

(Akron, Ohio) - Akron’s Jordan Smith snapped a 5-5 tie with a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth, leading the RubberDucks to a 6-5 win over the Altoona Curve on Wednesday night at Canal Park.

Smith went 3-for-4 on the night, and is 4-for-6 in the series. The outfielder knocked in two of the six runs.With the win, the RubberDucks are now tied for first with the Richmond Flying Squirrels. The Bowie Baysox follows the Ducks in third, by 5 ½ games for the final playoff spot in the Eastern League’s Western Division.

Solo homers by Jake Lowery in the fourth and Anthony Gallas in the fifth tied the game at 5-5 after Altoona led 5-3 in the top of the fourth inning. It marked Gallas’ 15th home run, and extended his hitting streak to five games. Altoona centerfielder Keon Broxton continued his hot series and is now 6-for-7 with three home runs and accounting for seven RBI. His three-run homer in the fourth gave Altoona a 5-3 lead. Broxton was not retired until facing reliever Jordan Cooper in the sixth. Cooper threw two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.

Joey Wendle recorded his first hit since his return from a fractured hamate bone, following a 0-for-3 outing in his first game back on Tuesday night. Reliever Elvis Araujo captured his first win for the RubberDucks, pitching one inning, walking two batters and striking out one. Enosil Tejeda followed, recording his fifth save with a scoreless ninth inning.

The loss was charged to Altoona reliever Collin Balester. The righty pitched 2/3 innings, allowed one hit, one run, and walked two batters. Akron starter Cody Anderson recorded a no-decision, hurling five innings, allowing eight hits, five earned runs and striking out four.

The Akron RubberDucks and Altoona Curve will declare a series winner Thursday night at Canal Park. Left-hander Shawn Moriando (2-4) will start for Akron, and Lefty Thomas Harlan (3-2) will take the mound for the Curve. The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and
