Snappers walk-off to beat Captains, 3-2
Beloit, Wisconsin - The Lake County Captains (12-7, 35-51) scored a run in the sixth in order to force extra innings but they fell in the tenth inning on a walk-off home run by right fielder John Wooten. The Beloit Snappers (13-6, 56-33) took game one of the series by a 3-2 final score at Pohlman Field on Wednesday night.
Left-hander Ryan Merritt made his sixteenth start of the year for the Captains as he took on righty Andres Avila, who made his second start and thirteenth appearance for the Snappers.
Merritt and Avila scattered a few singles in the first three innings before the Captains struck first in the fourth inning. Second baseman Yhoxian Medina led off with a single to center field. After a fly out, centerfielder Logan Vick laced a single to move Medina to second. First baseman Joe Sever followed with a RBI single to score Medina. Sever now has 30 runs batted in on the year.
The Captains loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth inning but could not muster a run across the plate as the Captains left ten on base throughout the game.
The Snappers pushed two runs to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Designated hitter Ryan Mathews and catcher Ryan Delgado led off the frame with back-to-back singles to left field. Centerfielder Dayton Alexander moved both runners up ninety feet with a sacrifice bunt. Left fielder Aaron Shipman grounded out to plate Mathews to tie the game. Captains’ third baseman Erik Gonzalez made a fielding error, allowing Delgado to score.
Gonzalez tied the game with his eighth home run of the year, a solo shot to right-center field in the sixth. Catcher Eric Haase doubled to left field before Avila exited the game. Chris Lamb entered and stranded Haase in scoring position.
Avila earned a no-decision, allowing two runs on eight hits in five and one-third innings. He walked one and fanned two batters.
Merritt also got a no-decision, after he gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits in five and one-third innings. He did not walk a batter for the eighth time in 2013. He struck out three batters. Grant Sides made his 2013 Captains debut with one on and one out. Sides retired the last two batters in the inning.
Both bullpens battled through jams to keep the game scoreless until the tenth inning. Wooten sent the 633 fans in attendance home happy with his fourteenth home run of the year.
The Snappers’ bullpen of Lamb, Nolan Sanburn and Tyler Vail combined to shutout the Captains on two hits, three walks and five strikeouts. Vail won his fourth game of the year with two scoreless innings.
Sides, James Stokes and Cody Penny nearly-matched the Snappers’ bullpen with four innings of one-run ball for the Captains. They allowed two hits and four walks. Penny took the loss after allowing the game-winning run.
The Captains outhit the Snappers 10-8 on the night with Medina, Sever, Gonzalez and designated hitter Richard Stock all having two hit nights. The team went 1-13 with runners in scoring position.
