Stock, Captains rally to topple Tincaps, 5-2
Lake County came back from a 2-0 deficit heading into the seventh.
FORT WAYNE, IN - Catcher Richard Stock and second baseman Claudio Bautista went deep in the ninth inning to give the Lake County Captains (23-24, 50-67) some insurance runs as they led 3-2 after eight innings. The Captains defeated the Fort Wayne Tincaps (22-26, 52-65) 5-2 on Saturday night.
Fort Wayne took a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning with two runs against Kime. Shortstop Trea Turner singled, moved to second on a failed pickoff, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Following a strikeout, Turner scored on a RBI single by right fielder Franmil Reyes. Kime was relieved by Robbie Aviles with two outs in the frame. Aviles surrendered two straight singles including a RBI knock by catcher John Nester.
Kime was charged with two runs allowed on five hits in five and two thirds innings. He walked one, hit a batter and fanned five.
Lloyd pitched into the seventh before departing after a leadoff walk to right fielder Mike Papi. Eric Yardley entered the game and gave up two singles to load the bases with Captains. Third baseman Grant Fink coaxed a bases-loaded walk to plate Papi. Stock grounded into a force out at second base but it scored a runner to tie the game at two. Yardley walked another batter to reload the bases with one out. Bautista flew out to right field and the runner, left fielder Torsten Boss, was thrown out at the dish trying to score.
Lloyd pitched six plus innings in a no-decision. He gave up one run on two hits and two walks. Lloyd continued a streak of six straight starts with at least seven punchouts.
In the eighth inning, Lake County gained the lead for the first time. Shortstop Ivan Castillo led off with a single and stole second base, his sixth steal of the year. Centerfielder Clint Frazier moved Castillo to third with a bunt single. Papi brought Castillo home with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Yardley took the loss with two runs allowed on four hits in two frames of relief work. He walked two and struck out one. Tyler Wood came in to try to keep the game at one run.
Stock launched his fourth homerun of the year with one out and two batters later, Bautista went deep to left field for his eleventh.
Wood surrendered the two solo shots in the ninth inning, his only blemishes on the night.
Aviles pitched two and one third innings of scoreless ball in relief. He picked up his second win of the season. He scattered two hits and hit a batter. Carlos Melo threw a scoreless ninth to earn his first save.
The Captains had eight hits in the game to Fort Wayne’s seven. Stock had two hits and two runs batted in. First baseman Nellie Rodriguez added two hits, including a double.
Lake County will look for the series win on Sunday afternoon in Fort Wayne. LHP Luis Lugo (5-9, 5.62) will start for the Captains and Fort Wayne will counter with RHP Jeffery Elone (4-3, 2.38). First Pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM from Parkview Field.
