Tribe news:

  • Outfielder David Murphy ran the bases on Tuesday and is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday. He is scheduled to play at least two games and will play five innings on Wednesday and seven innings on Thursday before the Indians reassess the situation. Yes, it is a playoff game, but that does not stop major league players from getting an opportunity to get some at bats when returning from injury before being activated on the major league roster.

Other news:

  • Reds right-handed pitcher Homer Bailey has a flexor mass tendon strain in his right forearm that he and the Reds are still looking into all alternatives for treatment and recovery. Reconstructive surgery is an option and a decision is expected very soon.
  • Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo is expected to be a candidate for the vacant Astros manager job this offseason. Other “potential” candidates include Craig BiggioTim BogarDave MartinezDave Clark andJoe McEwing.
  • Jeff Passon of Yahoo Sports predicts that Cole Hamels will be traded in the offseason as he is the only real option on the table for the Phillies to get a bunch of needs in return.
  • Braves right-hander Kris Medlen is recovering from Tommy John surgery six months ago and has started throwing a baseball.
  • The Padres designated left-handed pitcher Troy Patton and infielder Chris Nelson for assignment.
  • The Angels have designated right-handed pitcher Michael Kohn and outfielder J.B. Shuck for assignment.
  • The Pirates have designated infielder Michael Martinez for assignment.
  • The Astros have designated right-handed pitcher Paul Clemens and right-handed pitcher David Martinez.
  • The Brewers have designated outfielder Caleb Gindl and released right-handed pitcher Hiram Burgos.
  • The Yankees have designated outfielder Zoilo Almonte for assignment and released right-handed pitcher Matt Daley.
