In this MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @ajnicholsIBI.

Here are the stories from Tuesday, May 27th.

Tribe News

  • Cleveland placed first baseman Nick Swisher on the 15-day disabled list due to a hyperextended left knee. Third baseman/catcher Carlos Santana was also placed on the disabled list (7-day) for a concussion. Slugger Jesus Aguilar was recalled from Triple-A Columbus, and the Indians also purchased the contract of catcher George Kottaras. To make room for Kottaras on the 40-man roster, reliever Blake Wood was designated for assignment.
  • Jason Kipnis rejoined Cleveland on Tuesday, but he won't be officially activated from the disabled listed until Wednesday.

Others News and Notes

  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports wrote that the middle infield depth in the Rangers' farm system may lead them to listen to offers to Elvis Andrus this summer.
  • Rob Bradford of reported that he heard from an industry source that the Red Sox are exploring the trade market for center fielders, though no move seems imminent.
  • The Reds signed hard-throwing reliever Carlos Marmol to a Minor League deal.
  • The Mariners agreed to sign veteran outfielder Xavier Nady. The deal is believed to be a Minor League contract.
  • Toronto signed lefty reliever Mike Zagurski to a Minor League deal. Zagurski opted out of his Minor League deal with the Indians on Saturday.

Indians might not be the only team with a potential fire sale come July trading deadline. Reds..Pirates..Rays...Rangers....

Tribe could trade the competitive balance pick - NOT HAPPENING. If anything they should look to get another.

Take errors in the minors with a large grain of salt. The scorekeepers in the minors are MUCH less liberal than the majors. I mean, Andrelton Simmons had 28 errors as a 21-year old at High-A in 2011.....he turned out to be pretty good. You have to ignore the errors for the most part in the minors and mostly go by what you/others see.

Sky, you can,t trade players that are in the draft .. As far Lindor goes, scouts from other teams say Lindor won,t ready for good, untill July 2015.

Samardzija was a guy that I and several others were big fans of getting this winter. Problem is the price is even higher now after this hot start. Plus, despite the injuries just not sure the Tribe needs to be gutting the farm for a SP at this point. Offense seems like the bigger issue (well and defense).

I mean, don't get me wrong, Shark and Kluber would look mighty fan a top the Tribe rotation. But it'll cost Salazar plus a lot more than what you mentioned (can't trade multiple top 100 picks either).

hopefully the "fire sale" sign has been placed in the front yard

, Not to belabor the point, but II don't think Swisher can be effective as an everyday guy anymore- he may have a young energetic mental approach, but the body is older, a bit overweight and out of shape. It's obvious to everyone and hopefully now the stubborn Francona that Lonnie Chisenhall has it in him to hit- righties, lefties- doesn't matter. I like him at first, Gomes as well. Hopefully, Aguilar is going to get a good look next couple of weeks so we know what he may be capable of at this level. MIchael Bourn still can't still a base when they need him to and it's killing the Indians. Cabrera and him were doubled in Detroit, and Brantley and him were doubled again last night- both of these key base stealing situations where he was unable or unwilling to do it. Jeff Samardzjia is available. This is a Cy Young guy. Would the Cubs go for Salazar, Hagadone, and a couple of top 100 draft picks? Probably not. Why does Lindor have 10 errors already? Is he really a good fielder or does he just have the appearance of being slick?

Hoping that Kottaras is here to stay. Need a real backup catcher and this whole play Santana at 3 different positions thing just ain't working. Now hurt on top of it.

Yeah only way Morales really fits is if Swisher's knee turns out to be a lot worse than being initially reported.

Morales would help but I don't think he solves our hitting woes. But at least you have more of a middle of the order presence. I just don't see the fit because he is a DH and the Indians already have Santana and Chisenhall spending a lot of time there when one is not at third.

Is next week when the Indians get past the draft and Dfa Scott Barnes? Then they go after Morales and sign him for the rest of the year. 25 Games the Indians have scored 3 runs or less.Scott Boras is his agent and will want him to test the market at end of the year. Do this, or fire the 2 hitting coaches that are a joke!

Could be the best thing for both guys.. give them a time out, rejuvenate.. recharge the batteries.. clear the cobwebs..etc..

or.. they could just oxidize... i.e. get rusty...
