In this MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB.  I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @ajnicholsIBI.

Here are the stories from Saturday, March 29th.

Top Stories

  • According to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox and ace Jon Lester have decided to table their contract extension discussions.  Abraham said that the two sides both agreed it was best to stop talks for the time being and they may re-open talks during the season.

Tribe News

  • Catcher Yan Gomes and the Tribe have agreed to a six-year, $23 million contract extension.  Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports also reported that the deal includes two option years.  The extension will cover two pre-arbitration years, three years of arbitration, and one year of free agency, with the chance to covers three years of free agency if the options are exercised.
  • The Indians have agreed to sign reliever Mark Lowe to a Minor League deal.  Lowe spent the spring with the Rays before being granted his release.  He will report to Triple-A Columbus and has an April 30th opt-out clause in his contract.

News and Notes

  • Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reported that Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw will start the year on the disabled list with a back injury.  Shaikin said that Hyun-jin Ryu will now start the Dodgers season opener on Sunday night.
  • The Athletics will designate former top prospect Michael Taylor for assignment.  The big outfielder had always experienced success at the Minor League level, but has struggled in his limited time in the big leagues.  Taylor is also out of options.
  • The Rangers decided to part ways with infielder Adam Rosales, designating him for assignment on Saturday.
  • Royals reliever Everett Teaford has decided to sign a $500K deal with the LG Twins of the Korean Baseball League.
  • Infielder Chris Nelson has opted out of his contract with the Reds.

MIchael Taylor is a guy I wouldn't mind grabbing either...

Very likely a AAAA guy but RHH OFer who maybe could platoon some with Murphy (allowing Raburn to DH vs lefties). Don't have his platoon splits in front of me though so maybe that's just a terrible idea. Once Bourn was healthy though not sure he's much worse of a bench option as Morgan...

Definitely a guy that could use a change of scenery...though probably to more of a team that can get him some ABs (Minny, Houston, Chicago, etc)..

yeah, lots of people were pissed about Drabek too. He and Carrasco have had remarkably similar careers to date. Dom Brown ... sucks! Tom Hamilton would always crack me up when the Indians would play the Mariners, Jesus Montero, in seemingly EVERY game, would do something idiotic running the bases, or make a hideous throw, and Hamilton would rip into him and berate the Yankees farm system, "another OVERrated Yankees prospect." If the Indians were in the NL, he'd have the opportunity to do that when Brown botched something in the outfield. Probably d'Arnaud will suck too. He's been the hot catching prospect for like 5 years.

I remember being pissed that the Indians didn't get Taylor instead of Donald or Marson in the Lee deal. I guess the moral of that story is don't trade with the Phillies, ALL of their prospects suck

If Atchison, Pestano or Wood get of to slow start I could see Lowe as one first options Indians would called up, Another depth option for the bullpen.

Would love to pick up Michael Taylor, maybe for one of our spare relievers (i.e. Shawn Armstrong, Preston Guillmet, etc). He would be decent insurance if someone like Rayburn gets hurt and allow Moncrief some seasoning time at AAA.
