In this MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB.  I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @ajnicholsIBI.

Here are the stories from Sunday, June 8th.

Tribe News

  • Terry Francona said that Zach McAllister will make another rehab start, this time for Triple-A Columbus, on Tuesday and that the starter could then rejoin the team next weekend in Boston.

News and Notes

  • According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Rays want at least three top players in return for star pitcher David Price, and if they can’t get that package this summer, they will wait until the offseason.
  • Cafardo also said that a Marlins official told him he doesn’t see any reason why the team wouldn’t add another player in a trade, due to the wide open NL East.
  • Also from Cafardo, if the Rockies continue to slide, Michael Cuddyer could be dealt this summer.
  • Texas has now lost first baseman Mitch Moreland for at least three months after the lefty underwent ankle reconstructive surgery.
  • Former All-Star closer Heath Bell has opted out of his Minor League deal with the Orioles and is now a free agent.
  • The Yankees outrighted pitcher Alfredo Aceves to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre.

It certainly is not a bargain when you're giving up prospects for him, and you could've had the other guy for nothing but cash! Also, Price's velocity is off 2+ mph. He has some weird numbers, high ERA, minuscule walk rate. Really his peripherals looks great, other than the velocity decline, but I would stay away from any pitcher with a major velocity decline like that. E.g., Ubaldo circa 2011

Consider that before the season the Rays reportedly asked for Santana, Salazar, and Lindor for Price and yeah I don't see Frazier, Anderson, and House getting it done. Not sure the Indians can pull off a trade for him without including Lindor. Lindor, Frazier, and Salazar is probably what you'd have to give up.

Price is 28yo and has a career 3.26 ERA and 1.16 WHIP

Kazmir is 30yo and has a career 4.03 ERA and 1.37 WHIP

Maybe "about the same money", but nowhere near close the same talent level. If anything, it demonstrates that 1.5 seasons of Price for 21-23mil is a bargain.
And above all, this is about a postseason push. Nobody would take Kazmir over Price in a PO series

Just a thought but they might be able to get Price if they trade Masterson. If the team is going to spend that money, Price sure has a lot more upside. Payroll wouldn't be too different next year and Price is used to pitching in an empty stadium that is Cleveland's hallmark.

Doesn't make much sense to give up prospects for Price, when they could have had a lefty starter for two years, for about the same amount of money they'd owe Price, but didn't want to pay the lefty starter that money because it was "too risky." Of course, they'd probably be tied for 1st place right now if they had re-signed that lefty starter.

Trading for Price will not put the Indians over the top. If they were considering to trade for Price I would offer Santana, Kipnis and McAllister first before considering Frazier or Lindor.

The other problem is that Price will make something like $17-18M in ARB next season, which would stretch the Tribe payroll past the breaking point.

Probably wouldn't get it done, and Frazier could be a star. I don't think I do that trade, Tampa always finds ways to fleece people.

I get where you're going with that, Tondo, but I really can't imagine the Rays accepting any deal that doesn't start with "Lindor, Frazier, and..."

Not sure the Rays would do it, but I would offer as much as Frazier, C.Anderson and TJ House for 1.5 seasons of D.Price and a supp 1st after a QO. With that pick the Indians would get as good a talent as Anderson/House and maybe even close to Frazier.

Price, Kluber, Masterson, Bauer, Tomlin with McAllister, Salazar as depth the rest of this season sounds good to me. Even losing Masty for 2015 wouldn't hurt as much.

If they're serious about contending the next two seasons, this is the kind of deal that needs to be made, Trading for a high-end LHP arm for the postseason
