The Transactions:

8/7/2012: Cody Penny assigned to Lake County Captains from Mahoning Valley Scrappers.

The Good:

  • One reason this offense has had enjoyed so much success this season is due in large part to C Charlie Valerio. For the season, he's hitting .290 with 5 HR, 31 RBI, and 5 SB. Some of his more "advanced" stats are also fairly impressive: .372 OBP, .452 SLG, .824 OPS.
  • By far, the most consistent bat in the Scrappers lineup this season has been that of 2B Joseph Wendle. In his past ten games, he's hitting .349 with a double, a triple, a home run, and six runs driven in. There wasn't even a doubt that he would make the All Star team.
  • INF Joe Sever has also quietly put together a solid season. He's hitting .304 with a HR, 13 RBI, and a SB.
  • RHP Jacob Lee has been extremely impressive this season. In 4 starts (12 appearances total), he's wracked up a record of 4-1 with a 2.30 ERA. In 31.1 innings, he's allowed only 18 hits and 8 walks while striking out 38.
  • OF Logan Vick, while it may not be apparant in the box scores, took a huge step forward this week. Vick really struggled coming out of the gate and his batting average was horrendous. This week, however, he put up some nice numbers, hitting .291 (7-24) with one run batted in.

The Bad:

  • Let's just start with the losing streak in general. The Scrappers have dropped their last six games and are really beginning to fall in the standings.
  • CF Tyler Naquin missed this whole week with what's being described as a strained lower back. While Naquin is being held out as a precaution and the injury isn't expected to be serious, it's never a good thing to miss an extended amount of playing time. Plus, the offense has really missed his bat at the top of the lineup.
  • As a team, the Scrappers have struck out 412 times, ranking them second in the league in that category. They need to show a much more patient approach at the plate to generate some offense.
  • The team also holds a 3.90 ERA, which ranks them fifth worst in the league. They've also given up the second most home runs (27). With an offense that's been streaky and inconsistent, the pitching staff has to be more of a force going forward.
  • One of the biggest disappointments, in my mind, has been RHP Robbie Aviles. He made two appearances this week (one start). In a combined 4.2 innings, he allowed 8 hits, 7 ER/R, 3 HR, walked 2, and struck out 2. For the season, he's 0-2 with a 7.33 ERA. In 23.1 innings of work, he's allowed 32 H, 19 ER/R, 3 HR, 8 BB, and 8 K. Opposing hitters have a .330 average against him.
  • INF Jairo Kelly has still yet to put his offense together, hitting just .154 in his past ten games and .215 for the season. His walk to strikeout ration is also concerning (10 BB/58 K).
  • OF Aaron Siliga had the perfect opportunity to showcase his talents this week with Naquin sidelined and managed just 3 hits in 20 AB (.150), not to mention he struck out 6 times.

Hitter of the Month: 2B Joseph Wendle

You really couldn't have asked for much more from Wendle. He's been a force in the Scrappers lineup from Day 1 and hasn't let up. He's hitting .323 with 3 HR, 24 RBI, and 4 SB. He also boasts a .376 OBP, .503 SLG, and .880 SLG. He ranks sixth in the league in batting average, ninth in hits (50), third in slugging, and fourth in OPS.

Pitcher of the Month: RHP Luis DeJesus

This was a no brainer. DeJesus has been dominant all season long and has really overmatched hitters. His struggles in Lake County earlier this season are a thing of the past and he's rebuilt his reputation quite well in Mahoning Valley. Since the demotion, he's compiled a record of 4-1 with a 1.93 ERA. In 10 games started, he's pitched 56 innings, allowing 40 hits 12 ER/15 R, one home run, and 11 walks, while striking out 36. Hitters have an average of only .198 against him. DeJesus ranks seventh in the league in ERA (technically fifth if you don't count relievers), first in innings pitched, tied for third in wins, and seventh in WHIP (0.91).
