Today the Cleveland Indians announced they have purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Josh Tomlin from Triple-A Columbus. To make room on the Major League roster outfielder Michael Brantley was optioned to Columbus following last night’s game. To make room on the 40-man roster, infielder Wes Hodges was designated for assignment. Tomlin will make his Major League debut tonight as he starts vs. the New York Yankees at 7:05PM ET in Progressive Field.

Tomlin, 25, has spent the entire season at AAA Columbus going 8-4 with a 2.68 ERA (107.1IP, 83H, 34R/32ER, 33BB, 80K, .212 avg) in 20 games/17 starts for the Clippers. He currently leads the International League in average against (.212), 2nd in hits per 9.0IP (6.96/9.0IP) and ranks 2nd in the league in ERA (2.68). Tomlin, who was selected to the International League All-Star team, started the year in the Clippers bullpen and 3 of his first 4 appearances on the year came out of the pen before being inserted into the rotation for good on April 28th. He has allowed 3 or fewer earned runs in 16 of his 17 starts this season and since June 18th he is 3-2 with a 2.33 ERA (46.1IP, 37H, 12ER).

A native of Tyler, TX, Tomlin was selected by the Indians in the 19th round of the 2006 June Draft out of Texas Tech University. Last year, he went 14-9 with a 4.16 ERA (145.0IP, 149H, 67ER) in 26 games/25 starts at AA Akron. His 14 wins led both the Eastern League and the entire Indians Player Development System while his 125 strikeouts were 2nd most in the EL and 4th most in the Indians system. Tomlin will be the 2nd Tribe starter (Gomez) and 4th pitcher (Ambriz, Gomez & Herrmann) to make his Major League debut this year. He wears #43.

Brantley returns to Columbus for the second time this season where he has hit .315 (76-241) with 9 2B, 2 3B, 3HR and 26RBI in 59 games.
