Urshela, R-Rod pace Mudcats in victory
Salem, VA – Giovanny Urshela and Ronny Rodriguez provided the offense to back Mike Rayl’s effort in a 6-2 win over the Salem Red Sox on Tuesday night at LewisGale Field. The infield duo cracked a pair of three-run homers, and Rayl pitched his 11th quality start of the season as Carolina improved to 23-21 in the second half and 55-59 overall. Salem falls to 17-27 in the second half and 58-55 on the year.
Rayl (8-8) held a potent Sox offense to two runs, one earned, on seven hits through six innings of work. He allowed one to score on a groundout in the third. Brandon Jacobs homered to the lead off the fourth.
Brandon Workman (7-7) suffered the loss after the Mudcats swarmed the right-hander at first pitch. Tony Wolters and Bo Greenwell reached on back-to-back singles. Urshela wasted no time, hammering a line drive over the left field wall to put the Mudcats ahead, 3-0.
The runs would be all Workman allowed. He finished the night after six innings, allowing five hits. He struck out nine batters after the home run.
Leading 3-2 in the eighth, Carolina sought some insurance. Urshela reached on his third hit of the night, and single, and moved to second on a hit by Jesus Aguilar. Rodriguez put the game away by blasting a missile high over the centerfield wall for a 6-2 lead.
Urshela finished 3-for-4, and a triple shy of the cycle. Tony Wolters recorded a multi-hit game for the fourth straight game with two singles.
The Carolina Mudcats go for the series win at LewisGale Field on Wednesday night against the Salem Red Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
