SCRANTON - The Columbus Clippers fell to the Scranton/WB Yankees 4-3 despite stringing together fourteen hits in the ball game.

The Clippers sent Kevin Slowey (2-3) to the mound, and Scranton/WB countered with Adam Warren (2-1).

Slowey picked up his third loss of the season after throwing five innings, giving up four runs, and striking out three Yankees batters.

In the top of the first inning Columbus was able to jump on top scoring two early runs.  The first run came on a double to center field hit by right fielder Chad Huffman.  Second basemen Cord Phelps scored on the play.  Later in the inning, designted hitter DH Matt LaPorta recorded his seventh double of the season allowing Huffman to cross the plate to make the score 2-0.

The Yankees were quick to answer, as in the bottom of the same inning designated hiter Jack Cust hit an RBI single to center field scoring in second basemen Kevin Russo.

In the third inning, right fielder Ronnier Mustelier hit a two run homerun over the left field wall to give the Yankees a 4-2 lead over Columbus.  This was Mustelier’s first homer of the season.

Columbus started to show forms of life in the top half of four, as they put together four hits and scored a run to move within one of the Yankees.  The run came on a Phelps single to left while the bases were loaded.

Blunderingly, that was all the offense for the Clippers could produce, as the Scranton bullpen held them scoreless for the rest of the game.

Kevin Whelan was brought into pitch for the Yankees in the top of the ninth, as he was able to successfully pick up his seventh save of the season.

These two teams will play game three of their series Wednesday in Scranton at 7:05 pm EST.
