Just a reminder, OF Matt LaPorta and 3B Wes Hodges will be out of the Akron lineup until Thursday. They are in New York and took part in the Futures Game on Sunday, with LaPorta going 1-for-3 with a BB and K, and Hodges going 1-for-2 with a double. Kinston RHP Hector Rondon also participated in the game and threw a scoreless-hittless inning with no walks or strikeouts.
LHP Chuck Logren returned...

Mills Is Rock Steady At First Base
Kinston Indians first baseman Beau Mills is in the midst of his first full season in the Indians organization after being taken in the first round of the 2007 Draft out of Lewis-Clark State (ID).
After a slow start to his season when he hit .222 with a .714 OPS in April, Mills has been one of the best offensive performers in the Indians minor league system since the beginning of May. In May...

On Saturday, Buffalo activated RHP Jeff Weaver. Weaver was signed to a minor league contract by the Indians on July 5. Also, RHP Bryan Bullington was activated. Bullington was claimed by the Indians off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 10. To make roster room for Weaver Bullington, INF Chris De La Cruz and RHP Frank Herrmann were transferred to Double-A Akron. Herrmann was 0-2 with a 1.38ERA...

Toregas Is In The Zone
Indians catching prospect Wyatt Toregas is "in the zone". You know, when the ball looks like a beach ball and everything they hit is right on the screws and finds a line, a gap, or goes over the fence for a home run. Akron fans saw this happen for about a month with outfielder Trevor Crowe, and for the last three weeks it looks like the baton has been passed onto Toregas.
"Yeah, this is probably...

OF Matt LaPorta hit his first home run on Friday night as a member of the Cleveland Indians organization. A clutch one at that.....two outs in the 9th and down a run with a runner on third, and he blasted a home run way out to left.
Catcher Matt McBride made his way behind the plate for the first time today in GCL action. He caught five innings and then was relieved. He is very close to being...

Minor Happenings: Sipp On The Mend
"Minor Happenings" covers the important developments and news in the Indians farm system. While most of the information in this report is from my own research and through interviews I have conducted with organizational personnel, some information in this report is collected and summarized from the various news outlets that cover each team.
A little smaller version of Minor Happenings this week,...

On Thursday, the Indians announced they have traded INF RYAN MULHERN and RHP DAN REICHERT to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for cash considerations. Mulhern and Reichert were both playing for the AAA Buffalo Bisons. Mulhern hit .250 (50-200) with 7RH & 26RBI in 58 games this season, while Reichert was 1-3 with a 4.40 ERA (43.0IP, 52H, 25R/21ER, 15BB, 29K) in 8 starts for the Bisons.

Minor Happenings: LaPorta Brings Thunder With His Bat
A little different setup this week with Minor Happenings. With the big trade over the weekend that consummated between the Indians and Brewers, and all the information coming out of it, I felt it best to do a special edition of Minor Happenings focusing just on the trade. The regular version recapping the news and notes from the previous week will actually post on Friday this week.
I was in...

I'll have a special Minor Happenings later this afternoon sort of giving an update on the Sabathia/LaPorta trade with comments from some scouts, agents, LaPorta, and Farm Director Ross Atkins as well as many other things.
Anyway, I was at the press conference in Akron on Tuesday night.....what a crazy scene. I'll explain more in the article as well. In any case, LaPorta is now officially here...

The Aeros announced three roster moves today, placing OF Trevor Crowe on the disabled list, activating OF Matt LaPorta from Milwaukee, and activating LHP Chuck Lofgren from the inactive list. Crowe was put on the disabled list with a strained left intercostal muscle (retroactive to July 2nd).
In Buffalo, they are going with one less pitcher in the bullpen for the next week as they await to...

Well, you know, there were some games played on Monday night. So, even with all the Sabathia trade talk abuzz, the machine must keep rolling. For any that missed some thoughts on the trade, scroll down the page for some things I posted over the last 24-36 hours. I'll also be adding more things in the next 24 hours including comments from LaPorta himself and from Farm Director Ross Atkins.

The headliner in the Sabathia trade, OF/1B Matt LaPorta, will make his Indians debut in Akron on Tuesday night. A press conference is scheduled at 5pm on Tuesday in the Akron dugout, and I'll be there for it as well as to see LaPorta in his first game action as a member of the Indians. I may even go back on Wednesday night since the media circus will have died down, and I can maybe get a more private...

One thing I always like to get, is a perspective from the other side of the deal. In this case, the Milwaukee Brewers. Brian Kapellusch over at was kind enough to respond to my call this morning and provide some insight on the four players the Indians are getting in this deal.
He and the rest of the guys over there, like here, have followed these guys extensively and may...

Well, it looks like the C.C. Sabathia trade to Milwaukee finally went down. After roughly a week of speculation, and a crazy Fourth of July weekend, a deal finally went down on Sunday afternoon. The players coming to Cleveland are still being confirmed, but OF Matt LaPorta is confirmed and apparently LHP Zach Jackson, RHP Rob Bryson, and a player to be named later believed to be 3B Taylor Green are...

I'll offer up some comments tomorrow in my late night update on all this C.C. Sabathia trade talk with the Milwaukee Brewers. I actually talked to a scout late tonight, a high ranking scout from a rival club and he flat out loves LaPorta and considers their system one of the top five systems in baseball. More on this has been a long day with family parties and with a trip to Buffalo on...

The Indians signed RHP Preston Larrison to a free agent minor league contract on Friday. He will report to AAA Buffalo in the coming days. Larrison has spent his entire professional career in the Detroit Tigers organization after being selected in the 2nd round of the 2001 draft out of Evansville. He spent the entire 2008 season in relief at AAA Toledo where he went 2-2 w/a 3.31 ERA in 29 games (35.1IP,...

Tomlin Has No Regrets Sticking With Baseball
Back when Kinston Indians right-handed pitcher Josh Tomlin was a freshman in high school, he made a decision that would forever change his life.
You see, that year he was playing on both the varsity basketball and varsity baseball team at his high school in Whitehouse, TX. As basketball season ended and baseball season started, the two sports became a conflict as they overlapped one another....

Happy 4th everyone!
On Thursday Akron 3B Wes Hodges was selected to play in the Futures Game in Yankee Stadium on July 13 for Team USA. He also is one of 60 players currently being considered for the 24-man United States Olympic Team that will be selected on July 16th. The Olympics begin in Beijing, China on August 9th, and outfielder Nick Weglarz is already on the Team Canada roster.
