A Wrong Turn In Albuquerque
Well, that was an eventful first day of spring training.
Not for the players, as they had an easy day on Friday since it was a camp day and morning drills were nixed where they instead just played eight-inning intrasquad games and were done for the day by 12:30pm.
No, it was an eventful day for yours truly.
I still have a hard time describing the insanity that was my Thursday night...

Okay, sorry for the lack of updates today. It has been one helluva past 18 hours for me, of which I will explain in greater detail tonight. I will say I have not been to bed in two days, got in at 6am WEST COAST TIME THIS MORNING (9am for you back in the East!), and my hotel had no internet because of damage from a major wind storm that came through here last night (and caused havoc on my flight).

The Indians today claimed RHP Jae Kuk Ryu off waivers from the Padres and he has reported to minor league camp. More Triple-A bully depth I guess. The Indians made room for him on the roster by placing RHP Jake Westbrook on the 60-day disabled list. Only 34 players remain in major league camp, and the 40-man roster is full.
Ryu, 25, made 5 starts for AAA Durham (1-2, 4.38 ERA, 24.2 IP, 26 H,...

Okay, I fly out to Arizona tonight at 9pm, but here is some info coming out of Goodyear on some injuries:
- INF Josh Rodriguez is sidelined with the dreaded intercostal strain. He is day to day.
- SS Carlos Rivero left yesterday's game with a knee injury.
No word on the severity Rivero's knee injury or how long J-Rod will be out, but hope to find that out while I am bouncing...

Tonight on Smoke Signals, Paul teams up with guest host Adam Burke who is filling in for me while I am in transit to Arizona. Adam will be doing an Indians show on Sunday night's this year, so be on the lookout for that. Anyway, tonight they will be previewing the Indians outfield and Michael Brantley's agent Josh Kusnick will be calling in at the end of the show. I also expect to call in sometime...

Holbert Excited For Second Voyage
Lake County Captains fans will notice a very familiar face on the steps of the first base dugout this year. That face is none other than Manager Aaron Holbert, who is returning for his second tour of duty with the club. Holbert is excited to be back as the captain of the ship in Lake County, and looks forward to the challenges that face him in his second season with the club.
"I am very thankful...

I am changing the setup on the site for purchasing the 2009 Indians Top Prospects & More book since the book recently became available on-line at several outlets such as,,,, and more. The most popular place it is available is Amazon, of which the link to purchase it can be found by clicking here.
The reason I am changing the setup is...

As those of you know who have read the Top 100 listing here on the site or read my book, there are a few people who I trust with their observations and opinions and they are invaluable in assisting me with coming up with a "fair" ranking for the Indians prospects. Two of those individuals, Art and Norman, are older gentlemen who have been following baseball much longer than I have and happen to be...

This morning the Indians optioned LHP Jeremy Sowers and C Wyatt Toregas to Triple-A Columbus and reassigned RHP Greg Aquino, INF Michael Aubrey, OF Michael Brantley, OF Matt LaPorta, and RHP Kirk Saarloos to minor league camp. Currently there are 37 players in Major League camp.
Also, with Sowers being optioned out, it is a two-dog race for the 5th starter spot now between Scott Lewis and Aaron...

2009 Indians Top 100 Prospect Wrapup
As a wrapup to the Indians Top 100 Prospect list, here are some answers to some popular questions from the listing. While I left the scouting reports more to fact and insight from scouts, players, and coaches, I left out my personal thoughts on each player for obvious reasons.
How strong is the system?
Compared to the other 29 clubs in baseball, the Indians farm system is now a Top...

Here are the box scores from the minor league spring games on Monday March 23rd against the Milwaukee Brewers affiliates. Again, as a note, "FPS" under the pitching stats stands for "first pitch strikes". Also, some stats are missing like the runs scored in the Columbus game and the velocities in the Mahoning game....these were not entered during the game.

Here are the box scores from the minor league spring games on Saturday March 21st against the Chicago White Sox affiliates. It was feast or famine as Akron scored 19 runs on 21 hits including 7 home runs. On the flip side, Kinston managed just one hit in their entire game.
(Note, for the Mahoning Valley box score, no offensive stats were compiled and some of the pitching stats are missing)...

Not much to report at the moment with releases, but apparently on Thursday the Indians made some cuts. One of those players was supposedly Todd Martin. Hopefully I can find out who some of the other guys may have been soon.
Also, I haven't mentioned this yet, but last week right-hander Joe Ness was released. Also, apparently catcher Brian Juhl has retired, though I am awaiting confirmation...
