Indians Prospect Insider

April 9, 2009   (0 comments)
Paul Cousineau and I are back on the cyberwaves after a week off last week. It has been a crazy past two weeks where Adam Burke subbed for me on 3/26 and we had to cancel the scheduled show on 4/2 due to reasons out of our control.
In any case, we have lots to catch up on and talk about tonight. Spring training has wrapped up and we will briefly talk about our experience out in the desert....

The Indians Double-A affiliate the Akron Aeros kicked off their season last night, winning in impressive fashion 9-5. What else is new these days in Akron.
Akron has been one of the Indians more successful affiliates in terms of wins and championships. They qualified for the playoffs last year for the fourth straight year and sixth time in the last seven years. More impressive, they have made...

AKRON, OH – Starter Hector Rondon carried a shutout into the sixth and catcher Carlos Santana belted a home run and drove in four as Akron strolled to a 9-5 win over Bowie before 6,615 fans at Canal Park on Opening Night Wednesday. The Aeros improved to 12-9 all-time in season openers with the win.
Rondon struck out a pair in a scoreless top of the first, and the offense gave him an immediate...

I just realized thanks to a comment on my Columbus roster posted on my blog yesterday that Juan Salas is MIA. He is not on their Opening Day roster, and it never occurred to me that really since March 21st he has been missing from Indians camp. He was optioned out on March 19th, pitched in a minor league spring game on March 21st and only threw a third of an inning and ten pitches before being removed....

Minor league opening day is roughly 48 hours away for most teams, and with that I will be providing team previews for all the Indians full-season minor league affiliates through the end of this week. Today, we kick things off with the Single-A Lake County Captains.
Last season the Captains recaptured some of that magic they had in their inaugural season at Lake County in 2003 when they steamrolled...

One note on the Kinston roster, outfielder John Allman has replaced Jason Denham. It is believed that Denham has been released.
Anyway, here is the Opening Day Columbus Clippers roster:
Rotation: Jack Cassel (RHP), David Huff (LHP), Aaron Laffey (LHP), Kirk Saarloos (RHP), Jeremy Sowers (LHP)
Bullpen: Greg Aquino (RHP), Vinnie Chulk (RHP), Matt Herges (RHP), John Meloan (RHP),...

Well, those of you who were hoping for another crazy story (and good laugh) in regard to my return trip, I am sorry to say you will all be very disappointed. Much to my surprise, my return trip to Ohio went very well. Amazing too, considering I flew to Las Vegas for the day on Sunday and returned bright and early to Ohio on Monday. That all said, I will NEVER forget what a crazy trip down it was to...

Akron's opening day roster has been set. Two changes from what I initially reported in my unofficial listing is that Carlton Smith will start on the Akron DL and that Damaso Espino will be the 2nd catcher. No idea what is wrong with Smith at the moment, nor catcher Armando Camacaro's fate in the organization.
The rotation is setup like this the first five games: Hector Rondon will get the opening...

Over the course of the past few seasons, Indians GM Mark Shapiro has made several trades where he flipped a big league player and received minor league prospects in return. But after the Indians acquire these new young hopefuls, how do the Indians go about integrating them into the system and getting them on board with their philosophies?
It all starts before the trade actually takes place...

McBride Shuffles Positions
At this time last year, Matt McBride was in the home stretch from surgery on his right labrum. Fast forward a year, and while McBride is healthy these days, his position seems to change by the day.
When the 2008 season ended, the Indians sent McBride to the Instructional League to get much needed at bats he missed since he was on the shelf for the first half...

A very short notebook today just to post the rosters. I will be back with a big final notebook tomorrow to wrap up camp and my trip out here.
Official Lake County & Kinston Rosters
Okay, official rosters for Single-A Lake County and advanced Single-A Kinston have been released. One small correction from yesterday is I incorrectly had Kyle Landis in Kinston and Danny Salazar in Lake...

Coaches Corner: Ruben Niebla
Akron pitching coach Ruben Niebla took a few moments before the game on Thursday to discuss a few players on his staff this year.
On Chuck Lofgren: "He is throwing the ball extremely well. It seems he has found a rhythm with his delivery right now and he is pumping in a lot of strikes. He looks very comfortable on the mound. He went through some adversity...

Indians Have High Value On House
What a camp it has been for prized left-hander T.J. House.
House may have been a 16th round draft pick out of Picayune Memorial High School (MS), but he was top three round talent that slid due to signability concerns. He eventually signed for $750,000, which is about second round money.
So far, he has been worth every penny as the 19-year old has...

Well, when players arrive in camp on Thursday morning they should all know where they are going to start the season. Today, after camp broke for the day once intrasquad games were completed, Ross Atkins and all his coordinators and coaches gathered for final roster meetings. At some point tonight, who is going to which full season affiliate, who is staying behind in extended spring training, and who...

Huff's Disappointment Should Be Indians Gain
When spring training opened this year, a lot of the attention was on who would end up winning the fifth starter spot in the Indians rotation. Along with Aaron Laffey, Jeremy Sowers, Zach Jackson, and Scott Lewis, one of the candidates for that rotation spot was left-hander David Huff.
Lewis eventually won the job, while Huff was shuttled...
