This Week in the AFL
The biggest news out of Peoria this week is the announcement that outfielder Nick Weglarz has been shut down for the remainder of the AFL after having surgery on a leg that he injured last summer. Wegz had a metal rod surgically implanted in his leg, which will work to stabilize the fracture and allow it to heal in a much shorter time period that if the surgery had not occurred. We're not sure exactly...

The Cleveland Indians short-season Single-A affiliate Mahoning Valley had a very good season in 2009, anchored by a starting pitching staff which had four regulars in the rotation with an ERA at or under 2.79 on the year.
The lone exception to the dominance that was the starting staff in Mahoning Valley was right-hander Preston Guilmet who finished the season 6-6 with a 4.09 in 15 starts,...

The New York Yankees won their 27th World Series Championship last Wednesday night, and in the process are taking a resounding beating by baseball fans and media everywhere about how they bought a championship after shelling out over $420 million this past offseason on the likes of C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Mark Texeira.
The problem with that is while the fans and media are right in...

It's Sunday, and time for our weekly update on how the players in the Indians system are performing in winter league action. All stats are through Saturday November 7th.
One quick note to give congrats to Indians catcher Matt McBride who went 1-for-2 with a 2-run home run last night in the Arizona Fall League's Rising Stars game. McBride's home run came in the bottom of the 8th inning with...

AFL Update: Weglarz Out, Fedroff In
Indians outfielder Nick Weglarz has been shut down and removed from the Peoria Saguaros roster out in the Arizona Fall League (AFL) because of recurring pain in his left leg as the result of a stress fracture in his left shin area that he suffered back in early August. He has not played in the AFL since Tuesday October 27th, and in eight AFL games he hit .240 (6-for-25) with 0 HR, 1 RBI, and a .704...

Here is a recap of Friday's conference call the media had with Indians manager Manny Acta, GM Mark Shapiro, and new pitching coach Tim Belcher on the hiring of Belcher as pitching coach. It should also be noted that Acta hinted that the infield coach will likely be named next as they are much further along in the hiring process with him than the other positions. Pure speculation on my part and nothing...

The Indians made another announcement today in regard to the structure of their organization, this time naming Ramon Pena as their new Director of Latin American Operations.
Pena is a veteran, respected scout with 28 years of scouting experience under his belt. He spent 21 years with the Detroit Tigers and the last three seasons with the New York Mets as Special Assistant to the General Manager,...

Without any comments from Mark Shapiro or Manny Acta yet on the hiring of Tim Belcher as the Major League Pitching Coach, here are some quick thoughts on the hiring off the top of my head:
When assessing the pitching coach possibilities, I think it was a foregone conclusion that that job was going to be filled from within. As a result, a lot of the focus was on Triple-A Columbus pitching...

Forward Heading
With the 2009 baseball season officially over with the conclusion of the World Series on Wednesday night many fans, players, and the organizations themselves are already getting primed and ready for the 2010 season which starts up in five months.
For Cleveland Indians first base and outfield prospect Stephen Head, the end to what was a very torturous 2009 season where he was saddled with...

Over the course of the next several weeks as we finish out the year, I will be posting lots of video I shot over the course of the 2009 season. I saw every affiliate many times this season and took in spring training and Instructional League as well, so there is lots to share.
This week, we kick things off with the most recent trip, which was to visit Goodyear, Arizona about three weeks ago...

This Week in the AFL
It has been an interesting couple of weeks in the AFL, as the Peoria Saguaros now stand at 9-10 on the season, good enough for a 2nd place tie in the 3-team AFL West Division. More importantly, former Akron closer Vinnie Pestano has been added to the Sags roster, which is great to see after he was shut down in the middle of a great season for the Aeros.
On a more depressing front, the AFL...

Command Is Graham's Key
The Indians have eight players out in Arizona participating in the Arizona Fall League (AFL), and one of the more intriguing players assigned to the prestigious offseason league is right-hander Connor Graham.
Graham is a new player in the Indians organization, having been with the Indians for just over three months since being acquired from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for Rafael Betancourt...

Updated 11/02/2009 at 8:30 a.m. EST:
Unconfirmed reports are saying the Indians have signed or are close to signing Japanese right-handed free agent pitcher Takafumi Nakamura. According to the Sponichi Annex (which is a site written in Japanese), the Indians have supposedly agreed to a minor league contract with the right-handed pitcher from Chuo University, which is a private university located...
